Month to start feeding hummingbirds

Here are some general guide lines on the hummingbird migration to answer the question of when should I start feeding hummingbirds and the month to start feeding hummingbirds, according to where you live.

If you live in the southern parts of the country mid march is a good to start feeding hummingbirds if you want to attract some of the early migrating birds.

Along the Gulf coast a few  hummingbirds start showing up in late February, but there are not many sightings until the first part of March.

About the first part of April the hummingbird migration starts to reach into Virginia, Kentucky and Missouri.

By the middle of April the hummingbird migration is into Ohio, Indiana and Illinois and by the end of April hummingbirds can be found as far north as the great lakes and in the New England states. Click the link Ohio Hummingbird pictures to see pictures of the hummingbirds that visit Ohio.

By the first part of May the hummingbird migration is into northern Michigan and Canada.

Hummingbirds have been back in Ohio for several weeks now, so putting the feeder up now is fine. It can take a long time for them to discover the feeder, we lure ours with a couple of feeders as well as a lot of flowers to attract them. They are attracted to the color red, so putting out some red flowers like geranium, petunias, cosmos, or other red colored annuals can get their attention quicker. Change the nectar about once a week or so, of if it gets full of bugs or looks cloudy.

Hummingbirds also come a lot in the early mornings and late evening, so you might not notice them for a while after they start to come. After you get one you’ll normally have a few others come, but be warned, ruby throated hummingbirds can be little haters. They will chase and drive each other away from the feeder and other flowers, some even chase large birds. It’s funny to watch but they are little pains at times.

Good luck, they are beautiful little birds.
