Should a hummingbird feeder have a perch?
Should a hummingbird feeder have a perch? I’m looking for a hand-blown glass hummingbird feeder for my mom for Mother’s Day, and the one I think she will like the most has a perch in front of the flower… I have never seen a hummingbird feeder with a perch before. I’ve just seen them hover in front of the flower! Will they use this feeder, or should I choose a different one?
Thanks!
Ive always used a humming bird feeder with a perch. It seems nicer for them because they get a rest while drinking and save that energy for going places.Did u know that 1 drop = 15 minutes of flight.Change the water every day or it will ferment and possibly get the birds sick. One thing about a perch feeder that u might not want is if you live where there are oriols they will drink the suger water too and keep the the humming birds from drinking while they are there.

- How should I fill my hummingbird feeder?I received a hummingbird feeder as a gift. It is a beautiful globe of glass with an opening into which the J-shaped feeding spout is inserted. You are supposed to fill it up with fluid/nectar and then turn it upside down so that the fluid flows into the spout and the birds can then feed from the mou

No – Hummingbirds don’t perch when they feed – They fly in, feed, then back out.

Noooo.
If you watch a hummingbird feed, they never perch. They flap their wings fast enough to stay in place as they suck the nectar.

I have never seen a hummingbird feeder with a perch. When they feed they hover and dont land so having a perch will only make it easier for other birds / animals to use it as a food source too.

Yes hummingbirds will perch. I think i would get the one with a perch
.
Just not sure about the glass ones, they tend to break if you get strong winds, unless you take it down. The birds wont be out anyways in storms. So should be fine.

instead of getting a feeder, research flowers that attract hummingbirds. the sugar water will ferment in the heat/sun…and basically you will be making the birds sick…and somewhat drunk. they do not perch, they hover in front of the flowers they feed on.

No, you don’t need a feeder with a perch — but it doesn’t hurt either.
They will sit and relax on occasion and it does make it easier to take pictures when they aren’t backing in and out from the feeder.

Yes, hummingbirds use a perch. We get Rufus hummies here & they always sit on the perch to drink. Sometimes they stay for 5 minutes or more.
