How do you keep ants off a hummingbird feeder?

25 July, 2010 (23:44) | hummingbird feeder | By: admin

We have a hummingbird feeder in our front yard and ants keep crawling into the nectar. We tried putting tape and Vaseline on the hanging post but they’re still coming. Does anyone know a good way to keep ants out of the feeder?

Answer……buy one of the ant moats on this page and your ant feeder problem will immediately be solved!

if the Vaseline isn’t enough look for a product in the garden shop called tangle foot, apply it as you did the Vaseline

  • Is honey made from hummingbird feeder nectar good or does it make the honey red if it has food coloring? The honey bees have horded all of the nectar in the hummingbird feeder. Most of the hive raided about 1 quart of nectar today. Will this affect their honey? Will manufactured nectar cause the honey to taste or turn out different from honey made strictly from flower pollen? It’s hard to say exactly,

I’m looking for a hand-blown glass hummingbird feeder for my mom for Mother’s Day, and the one I think she will like the most has a perch in front of the flower… I have never seen a hummingbird feeder with a perch before. I’ve just seen them hover in front

Also since it is in my back yard the yellowjackets think they own the place and I couldn’t eat anything out there anymore. Please send suggestions! Thanks! Take the hummingbird feeder down and clean it. Get all the ants off and re-apply the vaseline.
Before hanging the feeder back up find areas where the ants are coming up to the feeder from and spray with an ant spray or bug barrier to stop their travels. Now put vaseline on anything else that allows them to crawl into the feeder. We have ants every year. I’ve been feeding the hummingbirds for many years.
Another pest are bees. But it is wise just to take the feeder down for a few days. The ant spray will help keep those ants away. Enjoy the hummingbirds. We just love them too.

Put Vaseline at various points up and down the post. You can also take an old margarine tub lid (or some other plastic lid) and cut a hole in it the exact size of the post. Slide the lid over the post. Many ants cannot bend their bodies around the edge of the lid so the lid will act as an ant guard.

Buy a small tin can (like what you might get meats in or small cans of cat food – they are colorful sometimes). Clean out carefully, poke a hole in the bottom (large enough for the chain or whatever your feeder is hangin from to run through). Put the can on the chain or rope a few inches above the feeder and put the vaseline in that. It keeps it in one place and nicely traps the ants and kills them. It works for me!

What is it hanging from. If you use a shepards hook, put ant powder on the ground around the bottom of the pole. You only need a bad of about 1/2 inch around the bottom of the pole to keep the ants from climbing it.

If it is hanging from a tree or shrub, put ant powder around the base of the tree or shrub.

If it is hanging from your house, sorry, but you will need to spray the foundation every two weeks to keep the ants from climbing your house walls.

please don’t use Tanglefoot or Vaseline around the feeder….. if a bird gets it on themselves they have no way of cleaning it off…. use an ant moat filled with water and keep it filled up…. you can buy one or make your own with a plastic cap from PAM or some other cap…. just do the hole and have some silicone sealant handy to make it waterproof.
