How do I use the ant moat in a hummingbird feeder?

25 July, 2010 (23:53) | hummingbird feeder | By: admin

I have a little moat on my hummingbird feeder that is called the ant moat. How does it work? Am I supposed to pour something in it?
Water evaporates fast? Is there something else that I can put in there?

You can buy a product called "Tanglefoot" at plant nurseries – it’s really sticky stuff that ants will get stuck on. If you put some of that in the bottom of your ant moat, and install it upside down, you won’t have the evaporation problem and birds won’t get stuck on it.

It’s tempting to fill it with oil or something, but don’t do it, because birds sometimes try drinking out of the moat.

Put some water in the moat. It keeps the ants from crawling onto the area where the Hummers eat.
