30 October, 2010 (14:58) | hummingbird feeder | By: admin

I want to be able to create a feeder that I can feed the hummingbirds in my yard with, some of the ones that i have bought leak.

Lots of good sites with info on how to do that.

Remember do NOT use red food coloring, or honey in your necter mixes.

I won’t use artificial sugar for the birds, but how is brown sugar for hummingbirds? I wouldn’t do it because molasses isn’t normally found in a humming bird’s natural diet. Brown

You can make them out of a pop bottle but its a bit of a pain….Better to just buy a good quality one…NEVER use red food color!

The materials needed to make your own hummingbird feeder are clear prescription vials with a fitted cap, a few feet of thin wire or heavy thread and transparent tape or scotch tape. You may also need a sharp pointed metal object like an ice pick.

This is an easy answer. I use to work for a summer school program for kids and one of the things we taught was how to make hummingbird feeders. They are as easy as finding an old plastic soda bottle and turning it upside down, drilling a hole in the bottom to suspend some way, decorate, and fill. The hard part is coming up with a good nectar. Check out the site below on other details. Have fun.

Above a lot of good stuff. I just will say, anything can work. What hold the Nectar in the feeder is vacuum, if there are no holes up top then nothing can run out the bottom. As the bird drink then it will suck air as needed from the bottom. Like a Hamster Water Bottle.
Glass jars and Plastic Coke bottles will work. Look at pictures of feeders. You can use a piece of Aquarium Air tubing and form at an angle with a stout wire. Tie a red ribbon close to the end. Just make the hole for your tube a little smaller than the tubing and it should seal on its own. Good tight fit.
